On 26th December, 2025, Photowalks Mumbai visited Matharpacady Village, Mazgaon, to experience Christmas celebrations the East Indian way through a thoughtfully curated heritage walk.
Participants were introduced to the rich history, culture, and architectural legacy of the East Indian community, one of Mumbai’s original inhabitants. The walk was led by Shantanu, Curation Head of Photowalks Mumbai, who guided the group through the narrow lanes and timeless spaces of the village, sharing stories that don’t always make it to the history books.
A truly fruitful interaction with the villagers followed, where participants and residents exchanged thoughts, memories, and concerns—particularly around the looming threat of redevelopment and the future of this historic village. It was a heartfelt moment, reminding everyone why such living heritage spaces matter.
The evening concluded on a warm and festive note with cake, savouries, and coffee, true to the spirit of Christmas hospitality.
A special thank you to Mr. Canute Monteiro and Mr. Stanislaus Baptista for their gracious hospitality and for welcoming us on behalf of the villagers. Such moments remind us—That Mumbai is a city with a big heart.
