    Monsoon Splash – 18th June 2017 – Part 2

All the participants took part in each of the series of tele-games which were innovatively planned with surprising twists and turns around the hall venue.  Excitement gripped the festive air as exuberant team mates and supporters cheered the contestants on at every stage of the games.  Small kiddies, young children, youth, middle-aged and seniors eagerly awaited their turn, enthusiastically competing in their event.  Team leaders, team mates and supporters watched with bated breath as the score points were marked up on the scoreboard after each series of games.

The Treasure Hunt in the school compound set the tone for the start of the evening after the first clue was handed over to the respective team captains. All the participants went helter skelter searching for the clues around the compound in the light drizzle and there were shouts of glee whenever they found their clues. The next game of “Infra Red” for participants between 3-6 years as well as 7-15 years saw the contestants trying their best to get through the spider web without touching the thread in the enclosed arena in the hall. Participants of 7-15 years tried their luck in hitting the darts provided at the magnetic Dart Board hung around the stage. This was followed by the participants in the age group of 16-26 years Balancing the Water Balloon walking back to back in the compound without the balloon falling. Bouncing the Ping Pong Ball in the bucket was the next game for the 27-49 years old participants.  The Senior Citizens enjoyed themselves at their game of Musical Chairs moving to the beat of the DJ Clinton. The Marble and Spoon race got the tiny tots engrossed ensuring that they did not drop their marble while at the same time keeping an eye on the other team participants.  The 7-15 year old participants looked like bunnies hopping along in the hall in the Sack Race. The budding footballers in the 16-26 year age group tried to hone their playing skills in the Penalty Shoot out. The Snake Trust Group game kept all the six blindfolded participants on the edge being guided only by actions by their team mate at the end of the snake to pick up the various soft toys strewn around the quadrangle and put them in their respective buckets. FoosBall played with six players aside, kept the crowd engrossed. The players had to retain their position throughout the game (within the White Circle) while kicking the football to score a goal only from their fixed positions among their team members. The Senior Citizens had to use their skills in Magnet Fishing to form the word “RAINBOW” from the alphabets strewn below the stage with the help of the Fishing Rod. The last game of the evening which was a group game was Snakes and Ladders. The participants enjoyed themselves moving up and down the board either with the help of ladders or being eaten up by the snakes after the dice was thrown by them.

There were two snack breaks, the first after the Musical Chairs and then after the Snakes and Ladders game. Participants were served wafers, chicken patties, Vegetable Samosas, and Frooti during these breaks.

As the games ended, the teams and supporters assembled before the stage for the awards ceremony. Vidhya announced the prize winners amidst rounds of applause –

Thunder and Puddles tied with 82 points. However, since Puddles won the Treasure Hunt they were declared the Winners, followed by Thunder. The Third place went to Lightning with 70 points and the fourth spot to Rainbows with 52 points.

Amidst thunderous applause, all teams were awarded prizes  –

Clinton Lobo was thanked for arranging the music, Stanislaus Baptista for doing the honours as the official photographer, our President, Percy D’Souza for sponsoring all the prizes as well as preparing some of the props for the games, notably the giant Snakes & Ladders canvas; St. Isabel’s School management for their constant support to the association and organisers of various events held in the school premises from time to time.

  • Matharpacady Cross Feast – May 2017

Matharpacady Cross Feast – May 2017

The Managing Committee of the Holy Cross Oratory organized the traditional Novena Services every evening from 22nd April 2017 onwards culminating in the Feast Day Celebrations on Monday, 1st May 2017.  Daily, young Prayer Leaders led the well attended services on the recital of the Rosary [dedicating each decade for a particular intention], the litany of Our Lady of the Rosary, litany of the Cross and litany of St. Roque [patron saint of the Village who had protected the residents from the scourge of the deadly plague that ravaged Bombay]. Boiled gram was distributed by helpful aunties and on Vespers evening ragda puri as a generous treat from an uncle.

On Monday, 1st May 2017, a large gathering of over 350 residents, friends and well wishers gathered in the village center around the altar on a stage, with a backdrop and under a canopy of decorative lights leading to the illuminated Holy Cross Oratory.  The Celebrant – Reverend Father Shavito Correia [St. John the Evangelist Church and Judge at the Ecclesiastical Court, Archbishop’s House] wended his way from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, “Eymard Cottage”, behind the altar server holding aloft the Relic of the True Cross, to the bedecked altar to the melodious strains of that beautiful hymn “The World You ave Made Is A Beautiful World”.Have Made Is A Beautiful World”.  Father Shavito, In a very inspiring and thought provoking homily expressed his happiness of being invited and welcomed in Matharpacady Village as he was born and resided in nearby Dockyard, comparing it to Jesus welcome in Capernaum. He expressed his joy at his homecoming to celebrate the 142nd Anniversary Holy Mass for the families in the village and of the  neighbourhood.  He repeatedly stressed on the many values and benefits of the family drawing inspiration from the holy family of Mother Mary, St. Joseph and Jesus.  He spoke of the need of each family member being a conscious and active participant in building and strengthening family bonds by making and finding time to be together, speak and discuss matters with one another, pray together and share a meal as a family.  Father Shavito spoke of the both the very visible and hidden dangers posed by the rapid advances of information technology, social media and networking whereby individuals and laity, and even the clergy, are glued to their mobiles and smartphones, and have no tine to share and grow in family needs and relationships and thus sadly have gone astray.  He reiterated that at this Eucharistic Feast Mass all of us should pray fervently and invoke the blessings of our Risen Lord to guide us, protect us and bless all our family members to follow in the footsteps of His family.  Father Shavito blessed the congregation with the Relic of the True Cross as Holy Mass ended.  The President, Mrs. Carole Viegas expressed the deep gratitude to Father Shavito on behalf of the Managing Committee, as well as our thanks to Father Frank Fernandes, Parish Priest, Rosary Church.

Families made their way to the Oratory to kiss and venerate the Relic of the True Cross, and thereafter collect their refreshment box of tasty goodies. Folk mingled around center stage exchanging feast day greetings and settled down for two games of bingo and an endearing entertainment program staged by young children. Feedback from residents and friends said that the Holy Mass and inspiring homily were meaningful and the celebrations most enjoyable.

  • Cyril’s Surprises

    Cyril’s Surprises

When you meet Cyril Alphonso, you will be surprised. He is more tech savvy  than an average youth, inspite of his age ( 82 years). He started off as a radio operator, but also held many posts at different times, when sailing with Wallem’s shipping Company.

My earliest memories as a young boy, was to see him at his verandah, giving us a wave of his hand in greeting. One vivid moment was, when he caught a kite that drifted into his balcony; he called out to me and handed over that precious piece of flying paper, which gave me great joy.

He was at that time one of the few ham radio operators in India. He still operates under the code name VU2AY. Before satellites existed, the ham radio operation was a sure way of communication in times of disaster or wars. Even today, the ham radio  community of operators exists and are in touch with one another.

His knowledge has since increased to computer stuff, which consists of hardware and software.

He has been of great help to the nearby St. Isabel’s School, where he helped start the Computer department. Subsequently he provides assistance to any person in need of old computer equipment for which he is adept at upgrading or providing solutions.

The miracle of Cyril, is that he now lives a second life. He was seriously sick and hospitalized. We wondered how he would come through after major stomach operations. But he has rebounded back to normalcy with a bang. After spending a lot of time being bed-ridden, he now walks around the neighbourhood. His faith in God, has given him this new lease of life.

Cyril is gifted with a knowledge of multiple languages i.e  English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, and Gujarati, and has the desire to learn even more of the local languages in India.

He has a compilation of spiritual music, and teaching modules which he has saved over the years.

But today, he is keen on passing on this treasury of knowledge in diverse stream , to his family and friends, rather than seeing it all going to waste. I am one of his beneficiaries.

Cyril has updated knowledge of all matters of the village specially in regard to the Leased land.  He has made it a point to study old documents which provides relevant information when needed.

I got to know Cyril better during my visits with Holy Communion to his home. But with improved mobility, he made it a point to attend the Eucharist daily, in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers, at Matharpacady.

I was in the midst of this article , and had not completed it for some weeks. Suddenly one day I got to know that Cyril had a heart attack, and was admitted to hospital for immediate surgery.

I was away from home, during this time, on a retreat;  I prayed that I may see Cyril well again, on my return. And yes, this wish was granted.  I was overjoyed to see him back home. He is slowly recovering, and his family is around him to shower him with their love and care. Cyril’s wife Sydil  is a devout lady, and they have been happily married. A few years ago they celebrated their golden wedding. They have two sons and a daughter, who have all started families of their own.

A walk with Cyril, would be a slow walk , but with a lot of talk!

We wish Cyril many more fruitful years in the quaint environment of Matharpacady.

PS:  Subsequent to this article, Cyril had a slump in health which involved hospitalisation twice during the last fortnight. He says that his time spent there helped him to share with Jesus a memorable Holy Week; and on Easter Monday he was back home. He has a bright and cheerful look. But now he  will walk less, maybe talk less, and listen more!
